About the artwork

This paper composition, with its leaves and cardboard marked by use, browned by the sun or deliberately inscribed, forms a whole. A rough-cut piece of scotch tape juxtaposes the sketch of a tree, a recurring motif in Patrick Sainton's work. Throughout the composition, he makes vertical and horizontal lines converse with each other, accentuated by writing in capital letters supported by a light line, allowing for perfect linearity. The footprints and other dirt on the cardboard support bear direct witness to the artist's creativity, as he reuses objects he steps on, perhaps even stumbles over. More than a work of art, the viewer is confronted with the artist's creative process. He makes art out of what for others is merely material. If the softness of a quasi-monochrome brings a certain homogeneity to the empty spaces that have become full, the expression "Ne rien mentir" (Tell no lies) that gives the work its title, raises questions. It plays on words, textures and emotions, and questions. Like Duchamp's Dada, Patrick Sainton juxtaposes, glues and assembles what he sees and what inspires him. His work is the reflection of his artistic instincts and emotions; his work is the externalization of his inner self. Although it's difficult for the viewer to understand the work at a glance, the artist compels them to participate in its creation, like a blank sheet of paper on which the gaze of the beholder takes shape. With elegance and simplicity, Patrick Sainton deposits the colors of his poetry on the wall.

Expert opinion

This work, which was part of the Self-Portrait exhibition in 2001 in Aix-en-Provence and in 2007 in Lyon, perfectly illustrates Patrick Sainton's poetic work and his desire "to paint with other materials".

About the artist

Born in 1956, Patrick Sainton is a French artist living in Marseille. Playing between writing, collage, drawing and painting, he works poetically on themes of the individual and interiority, using chance and instinct. Known for his Poèmes Tombés series, he deposits words collected from newspapers on the surface of paper. His compositions, somewhere between abstract and figurative, deliberately disturb the viewer's understanding. Patrick Sainton has exhibited widely, notably in France. In 1992, he took part in a group show at the Centre George Pompidou (Paris), in 1999 in Liège and in 2006 at the Musée départemental de Gap. Also a writer, whose words are both poetic and philosophical, he published 3 works between 1997 and 2009: Abandons, Ce soir j'aperçois ma tête d'orage, and Battre le cœur. Battre.

“The real problem would be to put things as they are. On the wall. Getting at it. A poor man's Donald Judd. Cardboard, string, tape, nails. Instinctively. Get your eye, your hand, your whole body in tune with the material, the space.”
