About the artwork

At the crossroads between tapestry and sculpture, this work evokes the question of gestation. For Amalia Ulman, tapestry becomes a direct, unadorned statement that draws its strength from today's codes.

Expert opinion

Amalia Ulman is an astonishing artist. A rising star on the contemporary scene, she doesn't allow herself to be trapped in the stereotypes she condemns, and astonishes with each of her productions. An artist to watch who has already been spotted by the entire art market ecosystem, Amalia Ulman's Maternity Leave shows all her originality and creative power. Pushing back the boundaries of her art each time, Amalia Ulman never ceases to surprise and make a name for herself, as in her first feature-length film, El Planeta, which she will present in 2021 at the Centre Pompidou to critical acclaim.
