About the artwork

A cityscape at first glance, we're immediately drawn to its two bright-red telephone booths in this black-and-white setting. However, close inspection of the image reveals a human figure covered in paint, blending in with these red London phone booths. It is, in fact, the artist, continuing a process begun in 2005 in his studio. This photograph is the trace of a performance lasting several hours, during which the artist remains frozen, eyes closed and camouflaged in his landscape. Paradoxically, the artist draws attention to himself by his willingness to be absent. In so doing, Liu Bolin comments on the Chinese government's urbanization drive, considering that the excessive development of cities encloses and invisibilizes the well-being of the human being as an individual. He then expands on this theme with performances around the world, revealing the limits and dangers of urbanization on a global scale.

This photograph is one of the most famous in the Hiding in the City series. It immortalizes a performative practice as poetic as it is protesting, which he developed alongside his work as a sculptor.

About the artist

Born in 1973 in Shandong, China, Liu Bolin is an artist who lives and works in Beijing. A graduate of Shandong University of Fine Arts and the Central Academy of Fine Arts of China, he has since pursued an internationally acclaimed photography practice, notably through the series he began in 2005 entitled Hiding in the City, and has since become known as the "invisible man". His sculptural work also includes human figures made of electronic components. His work, whether photographic or sculptural, suggests a message of humanity in peril, dissolved in an urban, technological heap. His work has been the subject of numerous exhibitions around the world, including at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris in 2017, the Musée de l'Elysée in Lausanne in 2018 and the Museo delle Culture in Milan in 2019.
