About the artwork
This composition is an assemblage of two watercolor images. At top left, the first drawing shows a woman holding and distorting her face. At bottom right, a second image features two individuals, with only their lower lips visible, bearing the words "hate" and "love". The tight framing of both images focuses attention on the skin, a recurring element in Leo Dorfner's work, while the words "hate" and "love", represented as tattoos, underline and recall the importance of text in the artist's creations. The use of watercolor lends a delicate, almost translucent texture. Like Leo Dorfner's other creations, this work is based on photos taken by the artist or found on the Internet. This gives the work a deliberately appealing aesthetic that plays on the superficiality of fashion magazines and social networks.
Expert opinion
Presented during the exhibition We're living in a social network at Galerie Claire Gastaud, this work is characteristic of the artist's recent production, which focuses on the association of images with her preferred medium, watercolor.
About the artist
Born in 1985, Leo Dorfner lives and works in Paris. Having taken up watercolor at an early age, he went on to study at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-arts in Paris (Djamel Tatah studio) and Caen. Drawing on the transparency of watercolor, he perfected his practice with assemblages of images gleaned from the Internet or from his own work. By highlighting the skin in his works, he also explores the aesthetics of tattooing, which he appreciates, sometimes using it to integrate a textual dimension into his artistic production. A leading figure in French contemporary art, Leo Dorfner has exhibited his work internationally, including at the Philharmonie de Paris, the Paju Museum in South Korea, the ECI Cultuurfabriek in Roermond, Netherlands, and Studio Khana in Cairo, Egypt. He is represented by Galerie Claire Gastaud, based in Clermont-Ferrand and Paris.
“I don't impose meaning on people. I don't tell them how to interpret my work. I like the idea of people making up their own stories.”
