La vierge au tire-lait

This photograph captures the portrait of a woman veiled in a large white cloth but with her hair loose. While her right breast is bare, her left breast is hidden by a breast pump in her hand. The viewer accustomed to iconography and religious scenes will not recognize the Virgin, as the title confirms. In this way, Alicia Brouilliard presents us with a contemporary Virgin whose preoccupations are not so far removed from the mother of Christ, and who continues to be assigned only to her role as mother.
