About the artwork
WDTH? 14 is part of Ron Arad's sculptural research into the line, structure and transformation of metal. Made from steel deliberately left in an oxidized state, the work adopts a form that evokes both fragmented architecture and spatial design in relief. The bent and welded metal bars form an irregular grid, whose protruding branches create a play of shadows and projections on the wall. Straddling the border between wall sculpture and three-dimensional drawing, the piece reflects the artist's ongoing interest in the tension between constructive rigor and formal freedom, revealing the raw materiality of metal as an expressive element in its own right.
Expert opinion
This work testifies to Ron Arad's ability to go beyond the field of design to assert a fully sculptural practice. Through its use of oxidized steel and the frontal nature of its composition, WDTH? 14 develops a minimal yet immediately identifiable plastic vocabulary. The limited edition reinforces its appeal to collectors, while its balanced format gives it a strong presence without excessive monumentality. The piece is in coherent continuity with the artist's research into structure and formal deconstruction, confirming his central position in the dialogue between contemporary art and experimental design.
About the artist
Ron Arad (b. 1951, Tel Aviv, Israel) is a designer, architect and artist internationally renowned for his experimental approach to materials and form. After studying at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem, he moved to London, where he continued his training at the Architectural Association School of Architecture. In 1981, he and Dennis Groves founded the One Off studio, which rapidly became a laboratory for experimentation with recycled steel furniture and sculptural forms. His famous Rover Chair, made from a car seat integrated into a metal structure, marked the start of a career in which art, design and architecture intersected freely. In 1989, he founded Ron Arad Associates, developing projects in architecture, public installations and industrial design. His work is characterized by a constant tension between industrial rigor and formal freedom, combining advanced technologies and artisanal processes. His work can be found in the collections of major institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Today, Ron Arad is considered one of the leading figures in contemporary design, on the borderline between functional sculpture and experimental art.
