About the artwork
This offset lithograph, created in 2005, features a vertical composition with a layering of distinct, brightly colored elements against a black background. At the top, a stylized, cartoon-like figure with a conical head and wide-set eyes is depicted. Below it, a more abstract and organic shape with camouflage patterns appears, followed by a spherical object adorned with intricate designs. Further down, a circular shape with several red and white eyes or openings sits above a cluster of green, leaf-like shapes. A delicate, rainbow-colored spiderweb-like structure emanates from the central sphere, reflecting off the dark surface below.
Expert opinion
Murakami’s prints, particularly those featuring his signature characters and motifs, occupy a specific segment of the contemporary art market. His “Superflat” aesthetic, which blurs the lines between high art and popular culture, has resonated with a wide audience, fostering a robust secondary market for his editions. The inclusion of special printing techniques such as glitter and UV coating in this work is characteristic of his approach to printmaking, enhancing the visual appeal and collectibility of his prints.
