About the artwork
In Untitled, Sina Ghasemi Sheelsar reveals all the sensitivity of her painting, rooted in a poetic observation of reality. At the center of the composition, a young woman stands isolated against a landscape of dense, vibrant greenery. The vegetation, rendered in luminous, contrasting strokes, seems to invade the pictorial space until it merges with the human figure, as if nature were slowly absorbing the figure. In the background, a dark, almost stormy sky accentuates the atmospheric tension of the scene. Here, the artist plays with the reflections of the wet ground, whose shades of red, green and blue disrupt the perspective and introduce an almost surreal dimension. This work reflects a profoundly introspective approach: Ghasemi transforms an ordinary moment into an image suspended between realism and dream, where solitude becomes a space for contemplation.
Expert opinion
This painting aptly illustrates the aesthetic maturity of Sina Ghasemi Sheelsar, whose work lies at the crossroads of poetic realism and emotional memory. His subtle use of light and color creates a tension between presence and effacement, figuration and abstraction. The almost motionless young woman embodies both the fragility and quiet strength of human nature in the face of the immensity of the world. The cinematic framing, inverted perspective and chromatic density recall the changing light of the Caspian Sea, omnipresent in the artist's visual universe.
Ghasemi's aim is not to tell a story, but to capture a vibration: that of a suspended moment when perception becomes emotion. Through this work, he affirms a painting of silence and memory, where every detail - a leaf, a reflection, a look - becomes the witness of an inner presence.
About the artist
Sina Ghasemi Sheelsar is a contemporary Iranian painter renowned for both his individual and collective practice within the Ghasemi Brothers trio, formed with his brothers Morteza (b. 1982) and Mojtaba (b. 1987). Graduating with a Master's degree in painting from Tehran University in 2012, he is developing a singular body of work that links intimate memory, cultural identity and formal freedom. Since 2015, the Ghasemi brothers have collaborated closely while preserving their individual trajectories, inventing a common pictorial language nourished by experimentation, spontaneity and a poetic attention to nature. Their visual universe draws deeply on the landscapes and symbols of their hometown of Bandar Anzali, on the shores of the Caspian Sea: rain, water reflections and the color blue become recurring elements of their aesthetic vocabulary.
The work of Sina Ghasemi Sheelsar and the collective has been presented on the international scene through numerous major exhibitions and fairs. In New York, the series Red Room 2: Migratory Birds (Elga Wimmer PCC Gallery, 2017) was hailed by Harper's Bazaar Arabia for its reflection on forced migration. In London, they participated in Soft Edge of the Blade (Frieze No.9 Cork Street, 2022) and the bahith (seeker) exhibition at Gazelli Art House. Their presence has also been asserted in Athens (Condo Unit at The Breeder, 2018, acclaimed by Frieze and artnet), Dubai (Art Dubai 2019 and 2024), Shanghai (ART021, since 2021), Paris (FIAC Online, 2021) and Toronto, where they exhibit regularly at Zaal Art Gallery, notably with the major solo show Blue Bird in 2024. With his sensitive, fluid approach, Ghasemi Sheelsar embodies a new generation of Iranian artists whose painting dialogues with the world while remaining rooted in the poetry of his native land.
