About the artwork

The low-angle view of this blue tractor, as if dropped by chance in the middle of the field, is the major element of the composition. This is subtly divided vertically by the perfectly straight tree trunk, defining the viewer's axis of perception. This duality is reinforced by the artist's color palette, offering a glimpse of the tumult of a sky divided between a mild spring day and a late-summer thunderstorm. The artist reinforces this incoherence by playing with the light deposited on what appears to be a meadow. On the one hand, the shadows are drawn by a setting sun; on the other, the green grass doesn't seem to lend itself to this. In the center, a silhouette with an intentionally unrealistic perspective stares back at the viewer. Could it be his reflection? As we approach, this figure, whose face is not perceptible, is probably a self-portrait wearing an African mask. The artist seems to be questioning his place as a young black artist with an immigrant background in an art history that is constantly being written. Using the codes of ancient painting and the great painters of the late 19th century, the artist applies matter in strokes, the mark of which is a form. He expresses himself here in the image of those who revolutionized the history of art by painting what they felt.

Expert opinion

This work was produced as part of an exhibition by students at the Kourtrajmé school. The delicately thought-out colors make this very limited edition a work characteristic of Rakajoo's work.

About the artist

Born in 1986, Rakajoo (aka Baye-Dam Cissé) lives and works in Choisy-le-Roi. An emerging talent on the French scene, he is a versatile, self-taught artist who positions himself through his art as a "witness" to the flux that characterizes our modern societies. The artist was first spotted in 2008 with a gigantic 300 m2 fresco he executed for his boxing club in Aubervilliers. He was then invited to create an exhibition on the theme of sport for the Jean-Luc Lagardère Foundation's annual event at the Théâtre du Châtelet in December of the same year. This was to be the starting point of his career as a painter, which led him to take part in various group exhibitions such as Boxe! Boxe ! at the Fondation Blachère in 2012, or Festival 12x12 at the Musée national de l'histoire de l'immigration in Paris in 2015. Now represented by Galerie Danysz, Rakajoo had his first major solo show at the Palais de Tokyo (Paris) in 2023, and was included in an exhibition at the Louvre-Lens in 2024.
