About the artwork
A triptych Untitled from the Head Shots series created between 2000 and 2002, this work attributed to Cindy Sherman consists of three close-up portraits of the same female figure, staged in subtle variations of posture, light and expression. Each image, in vertical format 57 x 39 cm, is printed in digital C print on Fujicolor Crystal Archive Type DPII paper, renowned for its chromatic depth and stability over time. Here, the artist continues her exploration of female archetypes and social constructions of identity, adopting the codes of studio portrait photography. The sophisticatedly coiffed and made-up figure moves between fragility and control, glamour and artificiality, revealing the constant interplay between appearance and fiction that runs through Sherman's entire practice. The work is signed on the reverse, one signature per trio of prints, and bears the edition number Ed./629.
Expert opinion
This triptych is fully in line with the conceptual continuity of the Head Shots series, a pivotal moment in Cindy Sherman's work in which the artist accentuates the frontality, theatricality and psychological dimension of her characters. The three-part repetition reinforces the idea of a performance of identity, with each slight variation suggesting an instability of role and a tension between mask and interiority. On the market, works from this period enjoy sustained interest due to their strategic place in the artist's career, between the historical series and more recent developments. The quality of the printing on Fujicolor Crystal Archive paper and the triptych presentation reinforce the plastic coherence of the whole. This work is of both museum and heritage interest, as it accurately illustrates one of Sherman's central investigations into image-making and contemporary female representation.
About the artist
Cindy Sherman is an American artist born in 1954 in Glen Ridge, New Jersey, and recognized as one of the leading figures in contemporary art and conceptual photography. Since the late 1970s, she has developed a body of work based on self-representation and staging, photographing herself in a multitude of roles that borrow from female stereotypes, cinema, art history and popular culture. With the Untitled Film Stills series, produced between 1977 and 1980, she made her mark on the international scene by questioning the social constructions of the gaze and the mechanisms of identification. Her work explores notions of identity, fiction, gender and representation, deconstructing dominant visual codes. By transforming photography into a performative space, Sherman questions the authenticity of the image and the fabrication of cultural archetypes. Exhibited in major international institutions and included in the collections of major museums, she occupies an essential place in the history of contemporary art as an artist who has profoundly renewed the relationship between photography, performance and social critique.
