Cindy Sherman

Cindy Sherman is an American artist born in 1954 in Glen Ridge, New Jersey, and recognized as one of the leading figures in contemporary art and conceptual photography. Since the late 1970s, she has developed a body of work based on self-representation and staging, photographing herself in a multitude of roles that borrow from female stereotypes, cinema, art history and popular culture. With the Untitled Film Stills series, produced between 1977 and 1980, she made her mark on the international scene by questioning the social constructions of the gaze and the mechanisms of identification. Her work explores notions of identity, fiction, gender and representation, deconstructing dominant visual codes. By transforming photography into a performative space, Sherman questions the authenticity of the image and the fabrication of cultural archetypes. Exhibited in major international institutions and included in the collections of major museums, she occupies an essential place in the history of contemporary art as an artist who has profoundly renewed the relationship between photography, performance and social critique.
