About the artwork

In Tortue Mécanique, Luce Naval translates the natural form of a turtle into a striking exploration of mechanical rhythm and organic geometry. Executed in olive-green tones enhanced by bright orange, the composition interweaves curved and linear structures, evoking both the protection of the shell and the movement of machinery. The work reflects Naval's fascination with the intersection of nature and technology, where living forms seem to be reconstituted according to a precise, almost architectural syntax.

Expert opinion

Tortue Mécanique is a striking example of Luce Naval's biomorphic abstraction. The work demonstrates the artist's ability to synthesize movement, balance and vitality within a meticulously ordered composition. The juxtaposition of fluid lines and technical precision suggests a meditation on evolution: how life adapts, transforms and mechanizes without losing its organic essence. Naval's refined mastery of line and color imbues the work with a discreet dynamism, placing it at the crossroads of abstraction and futuristic vision.

About the artist

Born in Paris in 1938, Luce Naval was attracted to art from an early age. Initially focusing on sculpture and painting, she discovered and devoted herself to color etching in the mid-1960s. At the age of 17, she entered the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris, then continued her training at the Atelier Yancesse Beaux-Arts, before spending five years at the legendary Atelier 17. Her quest for excellence also took her to Madrid (Académie San Fernando) and Denmark (Kunst Academiet Beaux-Arts de Copenhague). She has won numerous competitions. Over the past five decades, she has organized solo and group exhibitions of her prints all over the world, including Australia, the United States and all over Europe. Her prints are archived at the Bibliothèque nationale (Paris), the Bibliothèque royale Albert Ier (Brussels), Artoteket (Sweden) and the Museo de la Gravure (Buenos Aires). She currently resides in the French countryside, in a small village in southern Burgundy, where she keeps her studio. Rediscovered at 83, Luce has since exhibited her work in the United States.

“"Abstraction allows me to speak the language of movement, not to imitate life, but to let it breathe through form and color." - Luce Naval on her practice”
