About the artwork

This lithograph exemplifies Ed Ruscha’s masterful combination of language, typography, and spatial ambiguity. In There and Here (State 2), Ruscha plays with the visual and conceptual tension between the words “THERE” and “HERE,” anchoring each within bold red geometric forms that evoke architectural structures. The composition invites the viewer to question the distance, continuity, and slippage between two seemingly simple positions, an exploration central to Ruscha’s lifelong engagement with words as images. The soft, atmospheric background contrasts with the crisp geometry of the red forms, while the diagonal white ribbons add movement and subtle dimensionality. The work typifies Ruscha’s ability to transform everyday language into visual poetry, pushing the viewer to reconsider how meaning is constructed through placement, color, and context. Created in 2007 in a small edition of only 40, the piece represents a mature work by one of the most influential American artists of the postwar era. Its signed and dated state further enhances its desirability for collectors who appreciate Ruscha’s nuanced approach to text-based art.

Expert opinion

Ruscha’s text-based works remain among the most recognized and sought-after elements of his practice. There and Here (State 2) is especially compelling because it distills his conceptual concerns—language, perception, place—into a clean, elegant composition. Pieces from small editions, especially those produced after 2000, often maintain strong demand, as Ruscha’s later prints are known for their technical refinement and conceptual clarity. The edition size (40) is notably small for a lithograph, adding rarity and market strength. Works that feature paired words or mirrored statements, such as There/Here, are increasingly prized for their intellectual playfulness and visual precision.

About the artist

Edward Ruscha (b. 1937) is a major figure in American Pop and Conceptual art. Based in Los Angeles, he made his mark in the 1960s with his artist's books (Twentysix Gasoline Stations, 1963), typographic paintings and photographs of highways and parking lots. Ruscha uses everyday language as a plastic material. Isolated words, slogans, interjections or marks are projected onto landscapes, gradient backgrounds or geometric shapes. His work questions the aesthetics of American popular culture, existential emptiness and the mechanisms of visual communication.
