About the artwork

This screenprint by Alex Katz presents a sharply defined portrait of a contemporary figure rendered in the artist’s signature flat planes of color. The composition is striking for its luminous yellow background, which sets the tone for the entire work and enhances the immediacy of the sitter’s presence. Katz isolates the head and shoulders of the figure, emphasizing his distinctive oversized hat, stylized features, and understated expression. The clean contours, deliberate simplification, and precise balance of tones exemplify Katz’s long-standing exploration of cool elegance and visual economy. Printed on Saunders Waterford paper, the work demonstrates the technical finesse of Katz’s printmaking practice. The rich, even colors and refined edges amplify the iconic quality of the portrait. Published by Lococo Fine Art in a limited edition of seventy five, the print is signed and numbered in pencil, with additional artist’s proofs created outside the standard edition. Copyright inkstamps by both the artist and the publisher appear on the reverse.

Expert opinion

This portrait is an exemplary demonstration of Alex Katz’s late style and his ability to distill personality into a set of bold visual decisions. Collectors value works like this for their crisp clarity and for the way Katz translates a contemporary cultural figure into an image of lasting simplicity. The print operates with the same authority as his large scale paintings, yet preserves the immediacy and accessibility that define his editions. The sitter’s recognizable silhouette and the confident use of color make this work particularly desirable within Katz’s recent printed output. The vibrant yellow background enhances the timeless quality of the composition and creates an iconic presence that resonates strongly with collectors of figurative contemporary art. Published by Lococo Fine Art, whose collaborations with Katz are widely respected, this edition holds a solid place within the artist’s printmaking catalogue. From a market standpoint, screenprints of this scale and quality continue to perform well, supported by sustained interest in Katz’s work from institutions and private collectors. Limited editions of seventy five remain relatively scarce, which contributes to their stability and desirability on the secondary market.

About the artist

Alex Katz (b. 1927) is an American painter, printmaker, and sculptor, widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in postwar and contemporary art. Born in Brooklyn and raised in Queens, Katz studied at Cooper Union in New York and later at the Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture in Maine, where he developed his lifelong interest in working from direct observation and in capturing the immediacy of the visible world. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, Katz forged a distinctive style marked by flat planes of bold color, sharply defined contours, and an economy of detail. His approach anticipated aspects of both Pop Art and Minimalism, yet remained firmly rooted in the traditions of portraiture and landscape painting. Katz became particularly known for his striking portraits of friends, poets, dancers, and especially his wife Ada, who has appeared in hundreds of his works. Over the decades, Katz expanded his practice to include large-scale paintings, cutout sculptures, and an extensive printmaking oeuvre. His images of landscapes—especially trees, fields, and twilight scenes—have become central to his late-career production, demonstrating remarkable freshness and vitality. Katz’s work has been exhibited in major museums worldwide, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, MoMA, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Guggenheim, the Tate Modern, the National Gallery of Art, and the Centre Pompidou. His influence can be seen in generations of younger painters working today. Celebrated for his clarity, elegance, and graphic precision, Alex Katz continues to produce new work well into his nineties, remaining one of the most enduring and iconic voices in contemporary painting.
