About the artwork
The bright red that pervades the composition immediately catches the eye. The word "URGENCE", written in white in an empty part of the work, also attracts attention and contributes to the serious character of the painting. The full message reads "State of emergency, police violence. Prevention measures. Obstacles to the right to demonstrate". It is illustrated by a drawing of a policeman facing a masked person. The violence of this confrontation is highlighted by the stains on the policeman's helmet, associated with bloodstains, and the intense gaze of the demonstrator. These stains are reminiscent of graffiti drips, which can also be seen in the message graphics. In this way, the artist plays with the codes of urban art to express her political message. Produced in 2018, RNST seems to denounce the police violence that has been engendered during the Gilets Jaunes protests in France by offering a violent critique of police oppression on the rights of the citizen.
Expert opinion
This work testifies to the different levels of interpretation that RNST manages to infuse into his paintings. Playing with the visual codes of urban art, the artist succeeds in expressing a clear message, the aesthetics of which contribute to the symbolic and topical value of his work.
About the artist
Born in 1972, RNST is a graduate of the Dijon School of Fine Arts. During his studies, he was introduced to graffiti in the 1990s by Cynik and adopted the pseudonym GEST. After being arrested by the police, he adopted the name Ernest in reaction to the trend towards American names at the time, and in reference to Ernesto Che Guevara. He particularly enjoys stencilling and draws his inspiration from the rock'n'roll and alternative scene. Following a two-year break, he dropped the "e" from his pseudonym in 2008 to become RNST. His compositions are deeply rooted in current affairs, striving to convey a political message and wishing to avoid making only "food paintings". However, the message is often coded and loaded with different levels of interpretation. Recognized on the French urban scene, he was represented by Bear Galerie at the ST'ART contemporary art fair in Strasbourg and by Lovamotik at District 13 in Paris Drouot in 2022.
