About the artwork

In a moment of suspension, a landscape takes shape between dream and reality. This view of the port of Shanghai treats the landscape in a formal interplay that contrasts the natural and the urban. Water and sky merge and blur the horizon, giving the work a hazy, dreamlike quality. A few boat figures and buildings appear in this setting, revealing the horizon and constituting the essential elements of the landscape. Here, the artist restores the landscape to its former glory, retaining an evanescent aesthetic derived from traditional Chinese paintings. Here, he exacerbates the vaporous aspect of forms, verging on abstraction, and thus represents a suspended moment that gives the landscape an expressiveness as gentle as it is poetic.

Expert opinion

Suspended between abstract and figurative, this work is representative of the artist's work, which creates compositions as contemporary as they are dreamlike.

About the artist

Born in 1977 in Shangxi (China), Gao Xiaoyun lives and works in Shanghai. A graduate of the Chinese Academy of Fine Arts, in the oil painting department, his work focuses on landscapes. He paints landscapes that are as harmonious as they are evanescent, treating water in a clear, limpid form that contrasts with a tortuous environment. His works become dreamlike fragments where nature reigns supreme. His work has been exhibited in China by the AI Gallery, and introduced to the world stage by the Asia Contemporary Art Show.

“As far as my technique is concerned, it's essential that I paint with spontaneity and flexibility to create an effect that is both dense and light, fast and slow, rough and delicate, cold and warm.”
