About the artwork
With its strict, simplified geometry, this work pays astonishing homage to Gustave Courbet's L'Origine du monde. Indeed, its straight, almost architectural construction contrasts sharply with Courbet's painting of the nude, which is all curves and softness. In this way, the artist expresses the break between academic clichés and those of contemporary art. Yet, while Courbet's work remains identifiable, it would seem that Dajiù wishes to overturn the antonymy associated with these two models and reconcile academic practices with contemporary mediums.
Expert opinion
This work bears witness to the artist's academic heritage and contemporary practices. A tribute to Gustave Courbet's Origin of the World, a major work in the history of art, it reconciles a graphic and digital aesthetic with academic traditions.
About the artist
Born in Nice, France, Dajiù is a digital artist who lives and works in Versailles. After an academic training in art, he discovered digital art, in which he pursued his career. At the age of 20, the artist was running a graphic production studio when he met Jean-Paul Najar, haute-couture designer and collector, whom he followed to Barcelona for a year. He then settled in Paris for 15 years, before traveling to Asia for 6 years to discover the cultures of Shanghai and Singapore. His work is rooted in this cultural plurality, drawing inspiration from Asian art as well as French masters such as Jean Dubuffet, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Niki de Saint-Phalle.
