About the artwork
With the portrait of David Z, bassist with the metal band Adrenaline Mob, NKSIN joins forces with the music community and pays tribute to the musician who passed away in 2017. In front of a bright red background, the face is depicted with the artist's characteristic smoky contours and gray, immersing the subject in a space imbued with melancholy and helplessness. This painting is part of his recent series of portraits without mouths.
Expert opinion
This work is typical of the artist's melancholy portraits, accentuated by the absence of a mouth and the presence of revolting eyes.
About the artist
Born in 1994, NKSIN is a Japanese artist. His work is marked by the subject of social discrimination, particularly given the discrimination he experienced because of his multicultural origins. Painting portraits of icons who have marked their eras with his contemporary eye inspired by Japanese culture, he fuses nostalgia with rejection of the past and present. NKSIN draws inspiration from both graffiti and digital animation, using the Renaissance technique of sfumata (a superimposition of very thin layers of paint). Internationally recognized, his work is exhibited around the world, including at Maison Ozmen in Paris in 2022 and 2023, and at Albertz Benda Gallery in Los Angeles in 2023.
“If we didn't have mouths, the discrimination we suffer in this world might cease, and the rhetoric that comes out of our mouths is the source of discrimination. [...] If we didn't have mouths, there would be no discrimination in this world.”
