About the artwork

Like the colorful portraits of Marilyn Monroe, Michael Jackson and Elizabeth II, Andy Warhol offers us his version of French actor Gérard Depardieu. Oscillating between photography and drawing, this silkscreen features geometric shapes and bright colors that reflect the artist's pop aesthetic. A leading figure in pop art, Andy Warhol explored society's fascination with celebrity and superficiality, recurring themes in his work. Having collected images of stars from an early age, the artist translates his attraction here through a singular representation of the French actor. This silkscreen is perfectly in keeping with Andy Warhol's artistic practice as an artist of repetition, capturing the objects and figures of the popular culture of his day.

Expert opinion

Presented in the artist's catalog raisonné (n°III.B.48), this Gérard Depardieu silkscreen was produced to mark the 10th anniversary of Vogue magazine.

About the artist

Born in Pennsylvania to Eastern European parents, Andy Warhol (1928 - 1987) is a major figure in American pop art. A multidisciplinary artist, he was equally at home in painting, sculpture, the literary arts and film. He began his career as an advertising graphic designer for leading fashion magazines, and through this door he entered the world of consumerism. In his art, he reuses the codes he has learned, developing bright colors, silkscreening, repetition and his fascination with images. Exhibited in major museums such as the MOMA, the MET, the Centre Georges Pompidou, etc., his work is sought-after and collected worldwide, making him the 3rd most quantitatively sold artist in the United States in 2023 according to the Artprice report. Some of his works were recently featured in the "Basquiat × Warhol, à quatre mains" exhibition at the Fondation Louis Vuitton in 2023.

“If you want to know all about Andy Warhol, just look at the surface of my paintings, my films and me, and I'm there. There's nothing behind it.”
