About the artwork
This work is all irony and misappropriation. Here, Christophe Goutal photographs one of the first buildings to mark the entrance to Paris for travelers arriving from Roissy-Charles de Gaulle airport. Not without a sense of humor, he questions the Parisian dream of every tourist who finds himself confronted with this first, uninviting image of the Parisian ring road and concrete bars. This effect is heightened by the contrast between the slogan "Life's good" and the neon lights inserted into the photograph. The irony is further heightened by the presence of bird noises that cannot be explained by the absence of vegetation. Halfway between photography and installation, this work intrigues and questions inconsistencies in both form and content.
Expert opinion
This work is representative of Christophe Goutal's art of détournement. Both a photograph and an installation, it is intriguing both for its neon lights and for the bird sounds that can be activated by plugging it in. It should be noted that the work shows some moisture pitting on the print.
