About the artwork
At first glance, this watercolor appears to be an illustration for children. However, it contains a number of morbid details that lend it an eerie dimension. The skull on which the little girl at the center of the work is sitting is a kind of memento mori. In this way, the viewer is reminded of his or her own anguish at the inevitability of death. The hands sticking out of the water, reaching for the sky, probably belong to drowning victims and reinforce the morbid character of the work. In this way, Koharutie depicts childhood through the prism of the anguish and suffering that can agitate this imaginative period.
Expert opinion
By depicting a morbid scene in the guise of a childlike illustration, this work is totally characteristic of Koharutie's work and his Emo-Pop Art.
About the artist
Born in Japan in 1977, Koharutie lives and works in Hiroshima. Her artistic approach is part of a genre of her own invention: Emo-Pop Art. In watercolors reminiscent of children's illustrations, she brings her anxieties to life, creating works full of paradoxes, between gentleness and violence. Koharutie's work has been exhibited internationally, including in France at Galerie 13 - Jeannette Mariani (Paris).
“For me, the observer, if the children are sad, I'm sad, too. If the children suffer, I suffer too. The children project themselves onto me, and so I become a child again.”
