About the artwork
This small object, somewhere between sculpture and drawing, is a crumpled ball of paper ready to be thrown in the garbage. Its contents are no longer legible, but the viewer can make out a few Chinese ideograms and the artist's signature. This "knowledge ball" is part of an installation by artist Song Xi entitled Knowledge Balls. The artist has fashioned dozens of paper balls from book pages whose contents are captured by the shape and rendered illegible. The Chinese artist highlights the subject of propaganda and the retention of knowledge and free thought, victims of all kinds of censorship.
Expert opinion
This work is a hybrid object whose status between drawing and sculpture gives it a very special appeal and originality. It should also be noted that this piece was part of a larger work, an installation shown at Asia Now in 2018.
About the artist
Song Xi was born in China in 1983. In 2015, he won the "Tomorrow Contemporary Sculpture Award", making him one of the artists to watch on the Chinese contemporary scene. His committed work questions authoritarian political systems and the tools put in place to contain the spread of knowledge and dissident thought. Through a highly diversified practice comprising installations, performances and sculptures, Song Xi also questions the ideologies that emanate from our socialized and constrained bodies. His work has been shown worldwide, including at ArtBrussels, Art Basel Hong Kong, Asia Now and the Beijing Photography Biennale. He is also part of the collection of the Yell Space Museum in Shanghai.
