About the artwork

In La Pureté, Hervé Martijn develops a painting style that is both silent and deeply embodied. The composition is structured by large, textured, almost mineral zones, crossed by strata and horizontal lines that evoke time, erosion and memory. The palette, dominated by nuanced grays and muted tones, creates an atmosphere of restraint and suspension. In the center of the canvas appears a human figure, sketched, fragile and almost effaced, as if absorbed by the surrounding material. This discreet presence acts as a point of tension between abstraction and figuration, giving the work an introspective dimension. Purity is fully in line with Martijn's research into traces, the body and perception, where painting becomes a space for contemplation and inner resonance.

Expert opinion

This work aptly illustrates one of the strong points of Hervé Martijn's work: a painting of slowness, matter and restrained presence. The human figure, deliberately effaced, reinforces the universal dimension of the image and invites the viewer to a sensitive rather than narrative reading. With its balanced composition, mastery of textures and intermediate format (80 x 120 cm), La Pureté is a particularly representative and accessible piece of the artist's work. It will appeal as much to a collector sensitive to contemporary painting as to a lover of subtle dialogues between abstraction and figuration.

About the artist

Born in Belgium in 1957, Hervé Martijn is an artist whose work explores the relationship between painting, matter and perception. His practice develops around a physical engagement with the surface, where gesture, texture and repetition occupy a central place. Through often structured compositions, Hervé Martijn questions the memory of forms, trace and time. His work is characterized by a constant tension between mastery and chance, formal rigor and freedom of gesture. Color, used with restraint or intensity depending on the period, acts as a vector of vibration and depth. His work has been shown in numerous exhibitions and can be found in private and public collections.
