About the artwork
Created in 2020, In Memory illustrates Michael Kagan's fascination with the heroic figures of the space conquest and the themes of memory, progress and human fragility in the face of the immensity of the cosmos. This strikingly intense black-and-white silkscreen evokes an astronaut's helmet up close, immersed in a field of abstract shapes reminiscent of both stellar debris and shards of memory. The artist combines geometric rigor and expressive gesture, blending mechanical precision with the human texture of paint. Based on her research into NASA's photographic archives, the work becomes a meditation on collective memory - that of technological feats, but also of the risks and sacrifices involved in exploring the unknown.
Expert opinion
In Memory perfectly encapsulates the tension at the heart of Michael Kagan's practice: between cold industrial realism and abstract lyricism. By limiting his palette to black and white, the artist reinforces the introspective dimension of the work - an elegy both personal and universal, where the void of space becomes a metaphor for human memory. This limited edition, much sought-after by collectors, testifies to the technical and emotional mastery of Kagan, whose work follows in the footsteps of the great painters of self-exploration and self-transcendence.
