About the artwork
Created in 2022, “Galaxy / Still” is part of the visionary “Machine Hallucinations” series by Refik Anadol, a pioneer in generative art and artificial intelligence. In this work, the artist explores the boundary between digital memory and cosmic perception, transforming vast databases of astronomical images into a poetic visualization of the collective unconscious of machines. The intense colors—reds, blues, and purples—blend into a fluid, almost organic movement, evoking a galactic nebula or an explosion of luminous energy. This abstract landscape is not the result of a paintbrush, but of algorithms fed by images of the cosmos, translating the visual memory of machines into a dreamlike and sensory aesthetic. Anadol thus redefines the concept of artistic creation, inviting viewers to contemplate the technological sublime, where data becomes matter and the machine serves as a vehicle for reverie.
Expert opinion
Galaxy / Still embodies the perfect fusion of art, science, and artificial intelligence—a true hallmark of Refik Anadol. The work reflects an approach to creation that is both scientific and spiritual, where abstraction becomes a form of mapping the digital imagination.
With its vibrant colors and visual depth, this limited edition of 88 pieces invites us to reflect on our relationship with technology, memory, and the intangible beauty of the digital world. “Machine Hallucinations” remains one of the artist’s most iconic projects, celebrated for its ability to transform data into pure emotion.
About the artist
Refik Anadol (b. 1985, Istanbul, Turkey) is a Los Angeles-based artist, researcher and pioneer of generative art. Known for his work at the crossroads of artificial intelligence, data science and immersive art, he redefines the relationship between human, machine and space.
A graduate of the Department of Design Media Arts at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), Anadol is also the founder of Refik Anadol Studio and RASA (Research in Autonomous Systems and Aesthetics). His works use machine-learning algorithms to transform huge datasets - whether from the cosmos, museum archives or environmental streams - into hypnotically powerful visual and sonic compositions.
Through monumental installations and immersive projections, he questions collective memory, perception and the notion of digital infinity. His projects, such as Machine Hallucinations, WDCH Dreams and Quantum Memories, have been presented in major cultural institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art (New York), the Centre Pompidou (Paris), LACMA (Los Angeles) and the National Gallery of Victoria (Melbourne).
Awarded numerous international prizes, Refik Anadol is today considered one of the most influential artists of his generation in the field of digital art and artificial intelligence, embodying a poetic vision of the "technological sublime".
