About the artwork
Created in 2009, Me and Double-Dob is an emblematic work by Takashi Murakami, a central figure in the Superflat movement, which fuses traditional Japanese art, popular culture and contemporary otaku aesthetics. The work features Murakami himself in caricature form, surrounded by his iconic creatures, including the famous Mr. DOB, here split into a mutant, monstrous version. Against a background saturated with multicolored smiling flowers, a recurring symbol of his visual universe, Murakami juxtaposes humor, violence and visual exuberance to explore the duality between childlike innocence and contemporary anguish. The explosive composition, in which chromatic saturation verges on psychedelia, reflects the tension between euphoria and chaos, between brilliant surface and critical depth.
Expert opinion
Me and Double-Dob is a perfect illustration of Murakami's ability to transform the language of Japanese pop culture into a world-renowned artistic discourse. In it, the artist questions his own image and that of consumer society, where identity becomes a product and the cute ("kawaii") rubs shoulders with the grotesque. This silkscreen print, with its exceptional quality of execution, bears witness to the artist's technical expertise and his reflection on the relationship between art, commerce and spirituality. Limited to 300 copies, it remains one of the most sought-after works from this period, a perfect synthesis of Murakami's brilliant and critical visual signature.
