About the artwork
This abstract canvas by Alex de Fluvia features a wide variety of patterns and typographic elements. The background collage seems to be made up of old posters and newspapers on which different motifs are mixed in superimposed layers. Blue graffiti, black curves and violet drawings, all overlaid with broad strokes of red paint, make this abstract canvas a complex composition of great formal depth. In Alex de Fluvia's work, chance and repetition play a central role, resulting in a composition of unpredictably arranged signs.
Expert opinion
This work characterizes the mature period of Alex de Fluvia, who here multiplies the means of expression between collage, drawing and abstract painting.
About the artist
Born in 1965, Alex de Fluvia initially studied art history at the University of Barcelona, where he developed a deep interest in modern art. In 1987, a trip to Madrid led to an exhibition of Mark Rothko's work, an experience that marked the beginning of his fascination with color and emotion in art. In 1996, he decided to devote himself fully to painting and moved to New York to study at the School of Visual Arts. It was in his Williamsburg studio that he began to create large-scale works, also integrating photography into his work. His first exhibitions took place at the Jan Abrams Fine Arts Gallery, where his unique style quickly attracted attention. After several years in New York, he returned to Barcelona in 2001, where he presented his work in various local galleries, consolidating his reputation on the Spanish art scene.
“It's an attempt to affirm that painting is a relevant means of expression. In a world overflowing with information, painting can still say many things and address complex issues in our society. It's humble and essential.”
