About the artwork
This is a sketch in the style of a black book, drawn on paper and dated 1983, combining two elements. The central tag, rendered in blue marker with a wildstyle bubble design, thick black outlines, and drip effects, reads “QUIK” and is accompanied by an arrow motif with the word “BOING” beneath it—a playful signature flourish typical of Lin Felton’s tags. A smaller inscription below in black marker reads “fuckin’ QUIK,” suggesting a personal or dedicatory note, possibly added by the artist himself as an informal aside. To the right, a separate piece in pink marker reads “MIN” with looping calligraphic scribbles above it, attributed to fellow writer MIN ONE.
Expert opinion
The date of 1983 places this sheet at the height of the New York subway graffiti era, when black book sketching was central to the culture as writers planned their pieces and exchanged tags off the trains. The presence of two distinct handwriting styles and mediums—a blue marker for QUIK and a pink marker for MIN—on a single page is consistent with genuine shared black book practice rather than a later composite.
About the artist
Lin Felton aka Quik was born in 1958 in Queens, New York. He began tagging on Queens walls at the age of 10. It wasn't long before he was covering the grayness of the city's trains with his name and recognizable graffiti. After graduating from Parsons School of Design, Quik was spotted by Dutch art dealer Yaki Kornblit, who encouraged him to move to Europe, where he would become a recognized artist. His work has become a fixture on the international scene, and has been incorporated into prestigious collections. His work can be found in the collections of the Museum of the City of New York, the Studio Museum of Harlem in New York, the Becht Collection, the Martin Visser Collection and the Groninger Museum in the Netherlands.
