About the artwork
With the delicacy and strangeness that characterize Françoise Pétrovitch's creative universe, this work by the artist presents a glove holding an old photograph of Belgian ceramist Charles Catteau, active in Wallonia during the first part of the 20th century and an important figure in the town of La Louvière. Catteau donated his collection to the town on his death, and since then it has formed the major collection of the Musée de La Louvière. The theme of the hand and the glove is prominent in her work, as a play between the revealed and the hidden, the concealed and the implied. This lithograph is part of Françoise Pétrovitch's residency at the Centre de la gravure et de l'image imprimée in La Louvière, Belgium. On 10 variations of a lithograph, the artist integrates 10 old photographs from the collections of the archives of the city and the CPAS of La Louvière. The work was purchased directly from the La Louvière print center at the Limited Edition Art Fair (LEAF) held at the Boghossian Foundation (Brussels, Belgium).
Expert opinion
This lithograph by artist Françoise Pétrovitch is important in more ways than one. First and foremost, the printmaking technique is characteristic of the artist, who has been a professor of printmaking at the Ecole Estienne since 1988. It also takes up the theme of the glove and the hand, frequently found in her work. Finally, the interplay between fullness and emptiness marks her practice in all the media she uses. The artist is currently the recipient of the Guerlain Prize for Drawing in 2021, as well as a retrospective at the Fonds Hélène et Edouard Leclerc in Landerneau (Brittany, France). Today, she is one of the most recognized French artists in contemporary art.
About the artist
Born in 1964 in Chambéry, Françoise Pétrovitch is today a major figure in French contemporary art.
Since 1990, she has been practicing a wide variety of techniques (ceramics, glass, wash, printmaking, painting, etc.), paying particular attention to drawing. Reserve is also very much a part of her practice. A game is played between the painted and the unpainted, the full and the empty, the moving and the stable, the structured and the structured. Figures are constructed by the emptiness that the artist allows to appear or assumes. Through these games, the artist is able to invite us into a universe whose perpetual tensions are revealed with gentleness, through beings of tormented innocence that rarely leave us indifferent.
His importance in the contemporary art world is expressed through a large number of solo exhibitions, both in France and abroad, as well as articles and broadcasts. Her works are included in the collections of the Centre Pompidou, the MAC Val, the Leclerc and Emerige foundations and other museum collections abroad (Hong Kong, Brussels, Manila...). In 2015, Françoise Pétrovitch was selected to take part in the fourth edition of "Women to Watch" by the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington.
