About the artwork
In this painting, a little girl swings in a green setting, while a city catches fire in the background. The bright, whimsical colors of this work are reminiscent of the graffiti work of Brazilian artist Tomaz Viana, known as Toz. From the street art he has deployed throughout Brazil and Europe, Toz here moves on to a smaller format, while retaining the codes of urban art. His colorful world and playfully naive characters form interactive narratives.
Expert opinion
Tomaz Viana is one of Brazil's leading graffiti artists. For over twenty years, he has been expressing himself in cities all over the world. In 2013, he unveiled a major urban panel at the United Nations headquarters in Geneva. Here we find the characteristics of his characters and his chromatic palette, which can be seen all over Rio de Janeiro.
About the artist
Originally from Salvador, Tomaz Viana, known as Toz, now lives and works in Rio de Janeiro. Specializing in urban art, the artist's joyful, colorful universe has made its way into the collections of museums and galleries. His imagination is built around references to popular culture, his cultural heritage and his everyday life, giving life to characters rich in personality and part of real narratives that often enter into dialogue with the place in which they are created. Since 2014, the artist has had the opportunity to exhibit in a number of institutions, both in Brazil and abroad, including a solo show in 2015 at the Mairie du XIIIe arrondissement in Paris.
