About the artwork
This man's head combines all the pictorial codes of Brazilian artist Marcio Atherino. Portraiture is a recurrent theme in his work. With expressionism, a face in profile is summarily drawn in black on a dark background. Here, however, the artist pays homage to Picasso and African art, a rare citation in his work. With a great economy of means, the energy of his brush is rendered in pure, contrasting colors, such as these red and yellow flows magnifying the features of this intriguing figure.
Expert opinion
In taking up the theme of Memento mori with this skeleton, artist Marcio Atherino is following in a long tradition of art history. A renowned painter in South America, his art is described in this way by Brazilian curator Angela Carneiro: "To enter Marcio Atherino's studio is to gain a passport to the world of art in his eyes and in his blood. Endowed with an expressive voracity typical of creators, and not bound to a single type of technique or theme, he transports us into the virility of his gestures for a universe of colors, looks, critical of urban human history. Through his work, we read the condition of contemporary urban man".
