About the artwork
Like a photograph, this work seems to freeze a young girl with apparent purity and gentleness. Capturing a moment, enigmatic and evanescent, Emi Kuraya takes up a leitmotif of her work, that of young girls with pastel colors and big eyes whose thoughts seem elusive. In this way, she creates a certain sense of unease that contrasts with the apparent serenity of the scene. Shifting the work between happiness and darker reflections, the artist invites us to question questions of immediacy and tranquility.
Expert opinion
An artist on the rise, Emi Kuraya is making her mark and is already being hailed by some as one of the most interesting and promising artists on the Japanese contemporary scene.
