About the artwork

Washed tones of blue, gray, and off-white dominate the surface of the paper, establishing a muted and atmospheric chromatic field. Centered within the vertical composition is an abstracted figurative silhouette, characterized by generalized facial features and a draped torso rendered through swift, layered brushwork. Linear elements to the lower left suggest a stylized animal form, integrated into the hazy background through scraping and translucent washes. The application of mixed media combines fluid paint handling with graphic incisions that expose underlying strata of the support. Signed in the lower right corner.

Expert opinion

This piece exemplifies the distinct stylistic vocabulary developed by Mohamed Oulhaci during the latter half of the twentieth century, bridging figurative suggestion and lyrical abstraction. Within the context of post-independence North African art, his output reflects an ongoing dialogue between traditional motifs and modernist painterly techniques. Market interest is concentrated primarily among collectors of contemporary Algerian art and regional post-colonial modernisms.

About the artist

Mohamed Oulhaci was born in 1943 near the Algerian-Moroccan border. Following initial teaching activities in Oran and a brief period at the École des Beaux-Arts, he relocated to Algiers in 1966, where he engaged with graphic arts and joined the Union Nationale des Artistes Peintres (UNAP). Since 1975, he has lived and worked in Mostaganem, dedicating himself fully to painting. His career spans several decades, marked by institutional and gallery exhibitions in Algeria and abroad. His practice incorporates elements of abstraction and figuration, drawing inspiration from the North African landscape, local heritage, and ancient visual traditions. Over the years, his work has evolved through experiments with texture, collage, and varied pigment application.
