About the artwork
Composed in 1990, the painting presents an atmospheric expanse dominated by pale ochres, muted greens, and soft whites applied with dense, visible brushwork. The surface texture builds up through layered impasto, creating an ambiguous visual field that oscillates between botanical abstraction and atmospheric landscape elements. The lower section anchors the composition with deeper earth tones and greenish hues, while the upper portions dissolve into a luminous, diffused light. Signed in the lower right corner, the canvas remains housed in its original wooden strip frame.
Expert opinion
Emerging from the post-independence generation of Algerian artists who engaged with European modernism while investigating indigenous visual traditions, Belhachemi occupies a distinct place within contemporary North African painting. His handling of surface texture and atmospheric light aligns with lyrical abstraction, linking material experimentation with landscape memory.
