About the artwork

This watercolor features clumsy lines and splashes of color that seem to form two moving silhouettes. This work is reminiscent of Henri Michaux's automatic drawing mechanism. He uses watercolor for its fluidity and spontaneity, in keeping with his need to liberate gesture. His mastery of gesture and rhythm allows forms and signs to evolve on paper with timeless force and freedom of expression, always captivating and resonating with the viewer. Michaux's watercolors do not seek to represent reality, but to evoke sensations. Their composition, often unstructured, invites the viewer to plunge into a personal, intuitive experience. The absence of a rigid structure allows the viewer to project his or her own emotions and interpretations.

Expert opinion

This work is characteristic of Henri Michaux's work and his interest in the unconscious.

About the artist

Born in Namur in 1899, Henri Michaux was a widely-traveled poet and painter who lived and worked mainly in Paris until the end of his life in 1984. He is renowned for his exploration of the unconscious through literature and visual art. His literary work is marked by a unique style, combining poetry, prose and verbal experimentation, often influenced by his travels in Asia and his psychedelic explorations. At the same time, Michaux developed an artistic practice, notably through painting and watercolor, in which he sought to translate internal states and personal visions. His artistic work is characterized by abstract forms and compositions that capture movement and emotion. Henri Michaux has exhibited his work in a number of prestigious venues over the course of his career, notably in France at the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, the Fondation Maeght and the Galerie Jeanne Bucher Jaeger, and internationally at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
