Henri Michaux

Born in Namur in 1899, Henri Michaux was a widely-traveled poet and painter who lived and worked mainly in Paris until the end of his life in 1984. He is renowned for his exploration of the unconscious through literature and visual art. His literary work is marked by a unique style, combining poetry, prose and verbal experimentation, often influenced by his travels in Asia and his psychedelic explorations. At the same time, Michaux developed an artistic practice, notably through painting and watercolor, in which he sought to translate internal states and personal visions. His artistic work is characterized by abstract forms and compositions that capture movement and emotion. Henri Michaux has exhibited his work in a number of prestigious venues over the course of his career, notably in France at the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, the Fondation Maeght and the Galerie Jeanne Bucher Jaeger, and internationally at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
