About the artwork
Adopting the codes of fashion photography, this work by Tingting Wang explores the limits of the genre. The neutral expression of the model and the white background allow the featured object to take center stage, as one would expect from this type of photography. Nonetheless, the sculptural dimension of the object is surprising, distancing it from a functional object. The object's different leather textures are magnified by the quality of the paper and colors, parameters that the artist carefully considers when creating her photographs. The particular geometry that adorns the composition further blurs the boundaries between fashion and art photography. Indeed, the object is cut off from its functional dimension and becomes a veritable sculpture. Similarly, the shapes glued to the model's face evoke both exaggerated make-up and the practice of drawing, bringing this photograph closer to a pictorial composition.
