About the artwork

While the vast majority of the sheet is filled with black lines, Chiharu Shiota plays with the contrast she creates between the materiality of her work and the message the artist conveys to viewers. The superimposed black circles represent a vortex that seems to escape from, or merge with, the inert, elongated figure.

About the artist

Born in Japan in 1972, Chiharu Shiota lives and works in Berlin. The notion of memory lies at the heart of her work, a concept she redefines by collecting and appropriating ordinary objects such as shoes, chairs, beds and keys. Using colored threads, she creates immense three-dimensional structures that engulf her viewers. A multidisciplinary artist, she also works with drawings, prints, video performances and photographs, exploring the "sensation of presence in absence". In 2015, Chiharu Shiota was selected to represent Japan at the 56th Venice Biennale. She has also participated in numerous international exhibitions, including the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennial (2009), the Sydney Biennale (2016) and the Oku-Noto International Art Festival (2017). Today, his work is internationally recognized and exhibited in prestigious institutions such as the Queensland Gallery of Modern Art (Brisbane, 2022) and the Hammer Museum (Los Angeles, 2023).
