About the artwork

"Toxic Mary" is one of Banksy’s most iconic images from the 2000s. Drawing on the traditional composition of the Virgin and Child, the artist subverts religious iconography here by replacing the baby bottle with a container marked with a toxic symbol. Through this stark contrast between innocence, motherhood, and poison, Banksy offers a sharp social and political critique of consumerism, indoctrination, and contemporary excesses. The work employs the artist’s characteristic visual language: an immediately recognizable image, rendered in black and white with a strong chromatic accent—in this case, the bright yellow of the toxic baby bottle. The drips also reinforce Banksy’s signature urban and spontaneous aesthetic.

Expert opinion

"Toxic Mary" is one of Banksy’s most sought-after historical silkscreen prints, largely due to the power of its image and its significance in the evolution of the artist’s visual language. Copies authenticated by Pest Control and preserved in excellent condition are particularly sought after by international collectors. This 2004 edition dates from Banksy’s most iconic period, prior to the global boom in the artist’s market. The combination of relative rarity, iconographic power, and historical significance strongly underpins the market’s interest in this work.

About the artist

One of the most recognized anonymous figures in urban art, Banksy is an English artist supposedly born in 1974. Since the 1990s, he has been making a name for himself with his provocative works, introducing the codes of the urban scene to the general public. His most acclaimed works are charged with a strong political message, denouncing both consumer society and political abuse. In 2018, Banksy made art market history with the self-destruction of Girl with Balloon, seconds after the hammer was struck, resulting in a new work entitled Love is in the bin. He is the second best-selling contemporary artist at auction, and his works are included in prestigious museum collections such as MoMA, Tate Britain and the Louvre.
