About the artwork

Teresa Esgaio's work is as realistic as the window display in a clothing store. Proof of her mastery of oil pastel, the artist reproduces a third-dimensional impression on paper, bringing the object to life. She contrasts the plastic illusion of a T-shirt hanging on an iron hanger with the unrealism of a flying pig. A drawing within a drawing, the mise en abîme proposed here translates the expression of time. By confronting the viewer with a T-shirt that in essence belongs to someone, yet doesn't exist, she indirectly represents the human figure. In keeping with her body of work, the artist seems to be reflecting on truth and falsity, the fatality of lack of control and the hope of change.

Expert opinion

This work, a mark of Teresa Esgaio's artistic talent and technique, was part of her monographic exhibition Take a number at Underdogs Gallery in 2018.

About the artist

Born in 1985 and based in Portugal, Teresa Esgaio was initially drawn to the world of science. She finally graduated from the University of Fine Arts in Lisbon in 2000. Her artistic practice is marked by this interest in the exactitude of mathematics and science. A bichromatic draughtswoman, she works with different shades of grey to explore themes of time, memory and identity. The precision and technique of her work have already won over numerous galleries and museums since 2015. Following her residency at the Undergods gallery in Lisbon in 2017, and numerous other national exhibitions, she is taking part in a group show in London in 2020. In 2022, her work is among the finalists competing for the Sovereign Portuguese Art Prize, to be exhibited at the Palace of Arts in Oporto.

“"While there isn't directly a representation of the human figure, I think it's present here [...] because this shirt obviously belongs to someone."”
