About the artwork

Inspired by the constraint of a comic-book box, this work presents a superimposition of compressed and distorted elements in the space of the canvas. Pop colors and characteristic comic-book strokes, influenced by the drawings of Jack Kirby, come to the fore in this painting, blending the worlds of science fiction, cinema and Marvels. This fusion of styles contributes to the dynamic nature of the work, referencing the usual speed of graffiti practice. Using a database of drawings, PRO 176 doesn't hesitate to distort them in order to construct his works like a puzzle. This approach creates compositions rich in detail, inviting the viewer to plunge into a futuristic world where narrative and visual distortion take precedence, capturing the very essence of urban art.

Expert opinion

Taken from a distorted comic book, this work reflects the wealth of artistic inspiration that PRO 176 draws on in its practice.

About the artist

Born in Paris in 1976, PRO 176 grew up in the suburbs of Paris and began drawing at the age of 5, inspired by the famous American comic book artist Jack Kirby. Influenced by urban artists such as Mode2 and Colt, he dropped out of school to take up graffiti. In 1996, he joined the Grim-Team, a group of Parisian graffiti artists, and went on to become a member of CP5, GT, UB and RTZ. It wasn't until 1997 that he adopted the name "PRO 176". Claiming a new graffiti aesthetic, mixing Marvels, futuristic abstract mathematics, alphabetic constructivism and Picasso cubism, his style, influenced by the Jack Kirby universe, is characterized by futuristic machines and spaceships from science-fiction films. More recently, his palette of vivid colors has given rise to large abstract figures colored and outlined in black, like comic-book bubbles. After a foray into music with three self-produced albums and over 500 concerts in France and abroad, in 2014 he published a monograph entitled Cosmonometry, exploring his artistic evolution. Since 2007, he has been exhibiting his work in galleries. PRO 176 is represented by Galerie Géraldine Zberro in Paris and Galerie David Pluskwa in Marseille.

“I was influenced by comics. From comics and graffiti, I went on to cubism. Since comics are considered a subculture, I tried to elevate them to the status of noble art.”
