About the artwork

Produced as a 20-color silkscreen print, this composition translates the dense layering and textural qualities of an earlier large-scale painting into a graphic multiple. The imagery is derived from an aerial cartography of Tulsa's historic Greenwood district, commonly known as Black Wall Street, juxtaposing structured geometric grids with a dominant, sweeping expanse of black ink. Multicolored rectangular markers and a vivid red upper ground fragment the visual field, referencing historical trauma and urban displacement. Created in partnership with The Broad to mark the museum's tenth anniversary, the edition adapts a key holding from its permanent collection.

About the artist

Mark Bradford was born in Los Angeles in 1961, where he currently lives and works. He studied at the California Institute of the Arts, receiving a BFA in 1995 and an MFA in 1997. His practice spans large-scale mixed-media paintings, installations, printmaking, and video, frequently incorporating salvaged urban ephemera such as commercial posters, billboards, and end papers from beauty salons. Throughout his career, Bradford has exhibited internationally, including representing the United States at the 57th Venice Biennale in 2017 and staging solo exhibitions at institutions such as the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Tate Modern. He is the recipient of numerous accolades, including a MacArthur Fellowship in 2009 and the Whitney Museum of American Art's Bucksbaum Award. His works are held in major public and private collections worldwide.
