About the artwork

The sheet's elongated format communicates directly with the colors deposited on its surface. Bram Van Velde's almost geometric abstraction creates forms that are independent in themselves, yet form a whole. Pink depends on black, blue on white and white on black. Bram van Veld doesn't oppose colors, but unites them; indeed, contours define solids, which in turn give meaning to the thick lines that run along their ends.

Expert opinion

This work is characteristic of Bram van Velde's work and perfectly expresses his search for geometric forms.

About the artist

Bram van Velde (1895 - 1981) was a Dutch painter associated with Abstract Expressionism. He began his career as an apprentice decorator before turning to painting. Settling in France in the 1920s, he evolved within the Parisian avant-garde, developing an abstract style marked by geometric forms and an intense color palette. Van Velde's painting expresses a profound existential tension, often characterized by pure compositions in which color and form play a primordial role. Despite his late recognition, his work is hailed for its emotional power and quest for the absolute. Linked to existentialist poets and writers, including Samuel Beckett, Bram van Velde is considered a major artist of the post-war period. In 1962, a retrospective of his work was organized at the Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam), consecrating his significant contribution to twentieth-century art.

“Painting is an eye, a blinded eye, that continues to see, that sees what blinds it.”
