Bram van Velde

Bram van Velde (1895 - 1981) was a Dutch painter associated with Abstract Expressionism. He began his career as an apprentice decorator before turning to painting. Settling in France in the 1920s, he evolved within the Parisian avant-garde, developing an abstract style marked by geometric forms and an intense color palette. Van Velde's painting expresses a profound existential tension, often characterized by pure compositions in which color and form play a primordial role. Despite his late recognition, his work is hailed for its emotional power and quest for the absolute. Linked to existentialist poets and writers, including Samuel Beckett, Bram van Velde is considered a major artist of the post-war period. In 1962, a retrospective of his work was organized at the Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam), consecrating his significant contribution to twentieth-century art.
