About the artwork

This drawing by Jean-Michel Albérola was created in the context of the exhibition "Cosmos 1939: Georges Salles, Walter Benjamin" at the Musée du Louvre in 2019. This exhibition explored the exchanges between Georges Salles, famous curator of the Musée du Louvre, and philosopher Walter Benjamin around the notion of "cosmos". Here, Jean-Michel Albérola offers us a condensed version of the two men's exchange, with a conceptual drawing in which words dominate form. He also includes a quotation from Georges Salles, stapled directly into the composition. The blue background and star alone sum up the theme of the exhibition and the depth of the exchanges between the two men: the immensity of the cosmos.

Expert opinion

This drawing by Jean-Michel Albérola is a real exercise in style, bearing witness to the intellectual exchanges between Georges Salles and Walter Benjamin. Known for his taste for words and literature, it illustrates the artist's work.

About the artist

Born in Saïda, Algeria, in 1953, Jean-Michel Albérola lives and works in Paris. For over three decades, his work has unfolded in a variety of media, blending figuration, abstraction and conceptual art. Paintings, sculptures, neon lights, artists' books and films are all forms he uses to explore themes such as the fragility of beauty, the ambiguity of the gaze and the challenges of the artist's role. His work, often imbued with humor and poetry, also tackles political and social issues. Through this approach, Albérola questions the limits and purpose of art. His works are part of prestigious collections, including those of the Centre Pompidou, the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, the Fondation Cartier and many other public and private institutions around the world.
