About the artwork

This photograph captured by Francis Saleil at Saint-Gobain's 350th anniversary celebration offers a vision of the "Sensations Futures" exhibition held at Place de la Concorde in Paris in October 2015. This shot features an imposing white building with padded forms in the background, truncated by a bright red edifice whose reflective surface visually enriches the composition. The photograph is deliberately cropped, creating lines that run through the image and add a geometric dimension to the work. The white, padded cubic pavilion in the background is called "LISTEN". One of four in the exhibition, it symbolizes the Saint-Gobain Group's acoustic performance. It offers a sound experience ranging from absolute silence to urban noise. The juxtaposition of the red building in front of the "LISTEN" pavilion creates a noisy visual energy. Touching on geometric abstraction with its lines, the photograph establishes a link with the music, underlined by the building's name in the background.

Expert opinion

The geometric lines of this photograph resonate with the music, as abstract art often does with musical dynamics.

About the artist

A graduate in architecture and design, Francis Saleil began his career designing contemporary furniture. During this period, he worked for the publisher David Lange, distributed by Roche Bobois. His talent was recognized in this field, and one of his creations was awarded the Via prize. Later, he broadened his field of artistic expression by turning to argentic photography. Each of his photographic creations is designed as a single copy. His use of chiaroscuro produces contrasting effects of light and shadow. Abandoning figurative representation, his creations are driven by abstraction, prompting him to reinterpret his panels by cutting them into different planes within the same support. Represented by Galerie d'Emma in Saint Raphaël, his work was presented at the 54th edition of the Safranité art festival in Saint Raphaël.

“Through my photos, I try to capture the atmosphere and the emotion felt, two essential components in making a beautiful image.”
