About the artwork
Winter light casts deep blue shadows across a snow-covered clearing in this depiction of a rural Russian settlement, where several traditional wooden houses with snow-laden roofs are clustered against a low horizon. The palette balances the cold violet and indigo tones of the snow with the warm ochre, rust, and red pigments of the timber structures and distant tree lines. Small figures and a sled traverse the foreground path, introducing a narrative element of daily rural life to the composition. Executed with thick, expressive impasto brushwork, the surface texture emphasizes the tactile quality of the wintry atmosphere and the dense layering of paint characteristic of mid-century plein air traditions.
Expert opinion
This composition exemplifies the realist-impressionist synthesis practiced by members of the Leningrad Union of Artists during the post-war decades, wherein direct observation of nature was paired with robust painterly execution. The handling of light and shadow, rendered through broken brushstrokes and contrasting warm-cool color harmonies, aligns with the pedagogical lineage of the Leningrad school. Within the secondary market, works from this period provide documentation of regional Soviet landscape traditions outside official state-sanctioned propaganda tropes.
About the artist
Alexander Alexandrovich Naumov was a Soviet and Russian painter born in Podolsk in 1935. In 1951, he relocated with his family to Leningrad, where he subsequently undertook formal artistic training at the Leningrad Higher School of Industrial Art named after V.I. Mukhina. During his studies, he received instruction from prominent figures such as S.I. Osipov and A.N. Semyonov, whose approaches influenced his development within the Leningrad school of painting.
Naumov became a member of the Leningrad Union of Artists in 1977 and maintained an active exhibition profile within the region. While widely recognized for his landscape and genre works depicting Central Asia, he also produced numerous compositions centered on Russian provincial subjects, rural landscapes, and architectural motifs. His career spanned several decades until his death in Saint Petersburg in 2010.
