About the artwork

Executed in 1997,the painting depicts a sunlit rural landscape dominated by a towering golden hayrick rendered in thick impasto. A deep blue sky forms a sharp chromatic contrast against the warm yellows and ochres of the foreground elements. To the right,a traditional wooden fence and a small structure with a pale pink roof anchor the composition within a provincial Russian setting. The application of pigment is dense and energetic, utilizing textured brushwork to construct both the volumetric mass of the hay stack and the surrounding atmosphere.

Expert opinion

Representing the mature phase of the artist's painted output, this canvas exemplifies the plein-air sensibilities cultivated within the Vladimir school of painting. The juxtaposition of saturated primary and secondary hues reflects a departure from strict academic naturalism toward a more expressive treatment of light and color. Within the broader context of late Soviet and post-Soviet regional art, pieces from this period demonstrate a persistent dedication to traditional motif documentation through heightened textural means.

About the artist

Nikolai Mikhailovich Baranov was born in 1929 in the village of Michkovo, Vladimir Oblast. He completed his formal education at the Ivanov Art College in 1960 and subsequently settled in the city of Vladimir, where he became a central figure in the local artistic community. From 1985 to 1992, he served as the chairman of the board of the Vladimir regional branch of the Union of Artists of the RSFSR. Throughout his career, Baranov worked extensively in both printmaking and painting, earning initial recognition for his linocuts and etchings depicting historical architecture and regional landscapes. In later decades, he shifted significant focus toward oil painting, capturing rural motifs, seasonal changes, and provincial life. He was awarded the title of Honored Artist of the Russian Federation in 1997. His works are held in various public and private collections across Russia.
