About the artwork
Against a broadly brushed green background, a red dress floats alone in the air, taking over the entire canvas. Although empty, it seems to suggest an invisible body and twirls, as if animated. Its shimmering, mannered red gives it a vivacity and character like no other. Inspired by Federico Fellini's 1968 film Histoires Extraordinaires, based on Edgar Poe's short story, this painting is part of a series of around ten canvases based on the same motif. This serial work reflects certain principles of narrative construction through images, and questions their staging.
Expert opinion
Valérie Favre devotes most of her time to painting, dedicating her practice to everyday objects. Working on each topos in a serial fashion, Red Dress is no exception to the artist's modus operandi. One of the works from this "Robe Rouge" series was acquired by the Fonds d'art contemporain - Paris Collections, indicating the museum quality of this piece and the recognition the artist enjoys.
About the artist
Swiss artist, born in 1959. Lives and works between Berlin (Germany) and Paris (France). Drawing on a powerful network of references, Valérie Favre's work questions opposites. The canvas is envisaged as a place of representation where narrative elements are staged and become actors. Awarded a prize by the Irène Reymond Foundation, she was also nominated for the Prix Marcel Duchamp in 2012. Her works are part of major public collections (such as the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris) and private collections (Collection Société Générale, etc.). In 2015, the Strasbourg Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art organized a retrospective of her work. As a result of this recognition, she has held the Chair of Painting at Berlin University of the Arts since 2006, following in the footsteps of Daniel Richter and Georg Baselitz. Valérie Favre is represented by the galleries Jocelyn Wolff (Paris, France), Barbara Thum (Berlin, Germany) and Peter Kilchmann (Zurich, Switzerland).
