About the artwork

Bryce Delplanque's subject is a Queen Anne chair, a type of British furniture from the 18th century. The choice of bright olive green for the pictorial treatment gives it a bold contemporary character. Highlighted by the brushstroke, the chair seems to stand out against the background. It's up to the viewer to build a narrative around the object, to establish links. Above all, the contrast between the vibrant color and the classic style of the chair blurs the boundaries between past and present, tradition and modernity. The overall aesthetic is contemporary, close to Pop art.

Expert opinion

Emblematic of Bryce Delplanque's work with objects, this chair seems almost to come alive, dancing as if personified under her brushes.
